The starting salary for a trainee Customs officer with around four years relevant work experience, or equivalent educational experience beyond school, is between $38,093 per annum and $41,022 per annum. These are the entry steps of the recruitment salary range for a Customs officer.
The salary for a fully proficient Customs officer is $47,572 per annum. Officers can move above the proficient step on completion of requirements to be a Senior Customs Officer and for consistent superior performance.
These figures include a base salary and an 'in lieu of benefits' allowance.
A Customs officer can expect to progress up the remuneration range as their performance increases.
Depending on your hours of work, your salary can be supplemented. Customs officers often work shifts or outside of standard working hours, and allowances are paid to compensate for this. The allowance payable is in the range of $3,236 to $9,020 per annum depending on the officer's hours of work arrangements – eg flexible hours (sometimes outside of standard working hours) or shift work.
