Changes to Bivalve Molluscan Shellfish (BMS) Import Requirements - Notice from NZFSA
The 12-month transition period for BMS import requirements ends on 30 August 2008.
From this date, only countries that have a pre clearance arrangement with NZFSA, or have applied for assessment of their country’s BMS programme, may continue to export BMS to New Zealand.
After 30 August 2008, exports of BMS from countries that have not applied will not be able to be imported into New Zealand.
Australia, Canada, the United States of America and the European Community have existing pre-clearance arrangements with NZFSA.
As of early August 2008, China, Chile, Vietnam and Thailand have each submitted applications seeking a pre-clearance arrangement to continue exporting BMS to New Zealand.
During the period that the application from each country is being assessed, imports of BMS will be sampled and tested according to sections 7.3 and 7.4 of the Imported Food Requirements: BMS. This will apply until an arrangement is determined.
Importers are advised to check for updates regarding pre-clearance arrangements. These are listed within the Imported Food Requirements: BMS which are available online here.
