Customs commemorates Anzac Day

Today the New Zealand Customs Service remembered those Customs officers who fell in the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars. Their names are commemorated on the Honour Boards in the Wellington Customhouse foyer.

The story of ANZAC started on that fateful day, 25 April 1915, when our soldiers landed on the shores of Gallipoli, Turkey. On this day for the last 94 years New Zealanders have acknowledged the sacrifice of all those who died in warfare, and the contribution and suffering of all those who served.

Comptroller Martyn Dunne in his speech said, “We are gathered here today to remember those who have fought in the name of our country. So to all those who sacrificed for the sake of the freedom and the peace we enjoy in this country, we owe gratitude. We also owe a commitment to them by continuing to serve our country through protecting its borders and maintaining the peace they gave so much for. We can do no less.”

We will remember them.
