Three new detector dogs: exploding into action

Three New Zealand Customs Service explosive detector dogs and their trainers recently completed a three month training course.

Last Friday the new dogs Urik, Thunder, and Luka were tested and certified by the NZ Police. The dogs will work in Customs' operational areas and also closely with the NZ Police to assist with any bomb threats.

All three dogs were provided to Customs by the Australian Customs Breeding and Development Programme in Melbourne.

The teams are:

  • Darren Fisher and  Urik (based in Auckland)
  • Blair Ridgley and Thunder (based in Auckland)
  • Sean Quinn and Luka (based in Christchurch)
