Life imprisonment for P smugglers a legal first

Two P smugglers have been given life imprisonment – a legal first in New Zealand.

Drug smugglers Chen Ming Chin and Pan Wei Feng – caught during Operation Major – appealed against their life sentences for importing and selling P, but were rebuffed last week by the Appeal Court.

Two other men in the ring also had their sentences increased. Deng Guo Wei, who initially received a 17-year sentence with an eight-year and six-month non-parole period, had his sentence increased to 25 years with a 10-year non-parole period.

Li Fan, who initially received 19 years and six months, with a non-parole period of nine years and six months, had his term increased to 25 years.

The court reduced the sentence for Kai Lok Fung, from 10 years jail to five years.
