Trade and Marine
The Trade and Marine Group is responsible for:
- Assuring the Government that imports and exports are legitimate and comply with public policy and New Zealand's obligations under international agreements;
- Assessing excise duties on relevant domestic production as well as import tariffs, excise-equivalent duties and GST on imported goods;
- Clearing marine passengers, crew and craft in accordance with Customs' responsibilities
The Trade and Marine Group manages the clearance of import and export goods and marine craft, passengers and crew entering or leaving New Zealand. This involves:
- Applying alert instructions;
- Clearing import and export trade, including international mail;
- Auditing import and export transactions and business systems;
- Assisting importers, exporters and members of the public to understand and meet their obligations;
- Accounting for import and export duties, GST and other monies owed to the Crown;
- Conducting searches of import and export consignments, where necessary.
