Offsite storage of wine

A licence application for offsite storage may be made for New Zealand wine which cannot be physically accommodated within the manufacturing area in which it was manufactured.

An offsite storage licence requires that the storage is by or for:

  • the manufacturer of the wine, or
  • the first owner of the wine, if that person is not also the manufacturer of the wine.
The applicant for an offsite storage licence must be the person who owns, occupies or operates the offsite storage facility. This may be a manufacturer or owner who leases the premises for storage purposes, or a transport or storage company who is storing the wine on behalf of the manufacturer or owner.  You need to complete an Application for a Customs Controlled Area Licence. Customs officers may access offsite storage areas at any time, and these areas are subject to audit.
