Update for Friday 27 January:

On Thursday 26 January, Customs received assistance from a Talleys fishing vessel, the Amaltal Apollo in locating the vessel Nilaya. The fishing vessel responded to our call for information and said that it had seen the Nilaya. The fishing vessel followed the Nilaya for some time, and from this information Customs was able to locate the Nilaya.

On the evening of Thursday 26 January, Customs officers onboard an aerial observation flight located the Nilaya. The plane circled the vessel and numerous attempts were made to hail the Nilaya, however no response from the vessel was given. No further sightings have been reported since then.

At the time of the sighting the Nilaya was travelling outside the 24 nautical mile contiguous zone. The New Zealand Customs Service has no jurisdiction outside the 24 nautical mile contiguous zone.

Customs is grateful for any information on the location of the Nilaya and we encourage anyone who has seen the vessel to contact 0800 4 Customs (0800 428 786). This is a nationally coordinated, 24-hour hotline to Customs.
