Christmas - clearance rush and counter hours 25/11/2016

Clearance rush

Christmas is near, bringing the usual high volumes and urgency of getting goods cleared on time. Customs is working hard to ensure service levels are maintained, including putting more staff into pre-Christmas clearances.

There are also a number of things you can do to make sure this busy season is not a frustrating one for you:

  1. Please make sure documents are correct, and lodgements are right before sending them to us. This will save a lot of time and mean further assessment may not be needed. And we can spend more time processing the clearance, rather than working with you to get documents right.

  2. Don’t leave it to the last minute to organise tricky clearances, particularly for yachts, temporary imports, or goods that require a permit.

  3. If you aren’t sure about something, talk to us early. It will be easier for us to tell you what we need to clear a consignment, instead of trying to obtain more details from you when the documents or lodgements aren’t correct or complete.

  4. We will endeavour to process all clearances and registrations within our normal timeframes, but please be patient if timeframes aren’t met for any individual clearance. We are here to help but, like everyone else, are dealing with high volumes and high demand at this time of the year.

  5. If your shipment is urgent, please note this in the subject heading and provide the reason. Customs considers the following categories as urgent: perishable goods, machine down parts, human remains, and live animals.

    • For the above mentioned categories, please include “URGENT - PERISHABLE GOODS” etc. in the subject heading when emailing us on: feedback@customs.govt.nz

    • If you feel your clearance is urgent, but does not fall into any of the above categories, include “URGENT” in the email subject heading and provide a brief reason. Or call 0800 4 Customs (0800 428 786).
