Government makes decision on the Border Clearance Levy 14/10/2015

Ministers Nathan Guy (MPI) and Nicky Wagner (Customs) have announced from 1 January 2016 a Border Clearance Levy will be paid when you purchase tickets for travel overseas. For air passengers and those arriving on private craft it will be NZ$18.76 excluding GST and NZ$22.80 excluding GST for cruise passengers. The reason for the difference between the two rates is the cost of clearing cruise ship needs additional biosecurity risk assessments at each port. Money raised from the levy will be used to protect New Zealand’s border from biosecurity and security risks. For more information see MPI website.
