Firearms and weapons


The importation of firearms is strictly controlled and a New Zealand Police permit to import is required. This permit should be obtained prior to the firearms arriving in New Zealand. 

All firearms and weapons must be declared to Customs upon arrival into New Zealand.

Firearms on board a craft from overseas will be detained and placed in safekeeping by the New Zealand Police who will hold then until your craft departs.

There are certain firearms that are restricted and not able to be imported, even temporarily, into New Zealand.  This list is available at from the New Zealand Police at www.police.govt.nz/service/firearms/.

The importation of certain types of weapons such as flick knives, butterfly knives, swordsticks, knuckle-dusters and any weapon designed to give the appearance of another article is prohibited.
