Live animals - Pets

You must clear your pets through Customs and MPI when they arrive in the country.

Once you've received your documentation relating to your pet/pets arrival e.g. Airway bill, Biosecurity clearance etc. then please email scanned copies to service.delivery@customs.govt.nz and note “Urgent – Live animals” in the subject line.

If you require urgent after hours assistance or clearance please email your request to ITOCTradeTargeting@customs.govt.nz.

You'll find full details on the importation of pets and animals, including all required documents, on Import pets and animals

If you are importing a dog then you are required to complete an Exempting Statutory Declaration.

Under COVID-19 restrictions there are three options for importers of dogs:

  1. Proof of registration in New Zealand; or
  2. Completed Exempting Statutory Declaration. This can be witnessed remotely under the provisions of the Epidemic Preparedness (Oaths and Declarations Act 1957) Immediate Modification Order 2020 (and subsequently signed by witness), plus overseas Vet Cert; or
  3. If you are not able to complete the Exempting Statutory Declaration remotely as per (2), including full signing, you will need to provide a confirming email from the authorised witness that they have witnessed as per Epidemic Preparedness (Oaths and Declarations Act 1957) Immediate Modification Order 2020, and the overseas Vet Cert. As soon as alert levels allow (within two weeks of this), you must forward the completed (signed by witness) Exempting Statutory Declaration by email to service.delivery@customs.govt.nz.
