During his career, Kiwa contributed to numerous successful operations, whether working in busy airport environments or supporting deployments across the North Island. He travelled extensively, operating in locations including Opua, Auckland, Tauranga, Napier, New Plymouth, and Wellington.
He particularly loved the hunt of the airport environment and while he received many compliments from passengers who knew him as the handsome detector dog patrolling airport terminals, his colleagues knew him as "Mr Serious" when it was time to work.
Kiwa's work also helped showcase the Detector Dog Programme to New Zealanders. During his career, he featured on the popular television shows Border Patrol and Dog Squad, giving viewers an insight into the important role detector dogs play in Customs' border operations.
Reflecting on their time together, Kiwa's handler, Senior Customs Officer, Cheryl says,
"Kiwa has been more than just a working partner; he's been a loyal teammate.
"Watching him develop into such a capable detector dog has been incredibly rewarding, and I'm proud of everything we've achieved together.
"His drive, determination, and love for the job made every day enjoyable. While I'll miss working alongside him, I'm grateful he is heading into a well-deserved retirement where he can relax and enjoy life."
Retirement hasn't slowed Kiwa down. Living with Cheryl, he spends his days soaking up the sun on the deck, racing along the beach, and exploring forest trails, although anyone who knows Kiwa knows he doesn't do anything at a slow pace.
Thank you for your service, Kiwa. After years of protecting New Zealand's borders, you've earned every moment of your retirement.
