The 32-year-old woman arrived at Auckland International Airport on 10 November 2025 from San Francisco and was referred for a baggage search.
During the inspection, Customs officers located 36 vacuum-sealed packages of methamphetamine hidden across two suitcases, weighing a total of 18.28 kilograms. This was after the traveller told officers she knew the contents of her bags and was not in possession of illegal or controlled substances.
A small quantity of cocaine was also found in the traveller’s handbag.
Chief Customs Officer Compliance / Enforcement, Ben Wells, says this sentence shows that if you attempt to smuggle drugs into New Zealand, you will be held accountable.
“Methamphetamine causes significant harm to individuals, families and communities across New Zealand, and Customs remains committed to stopping those who seek to bring illicit drugs into our country.
“Whether it’s a traveller's first visit to New Zealand or they have been here multiple times, Customs will take action whenever criminal activity is detected."
