Game over: Customs foils New Zealand courier’s smuggling attempt
12.00pm 10 June 2026
A 20-year-old New Zealand national was arrested at Auckland International Airport yesterday after Customs officers uncovered 19.7 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed within his luggage.
He was due to appear in the Manukau District Court today (10 June 2026) charged with the importation of a class A controlled drug.
The man arrived at Auckland International Airport off a flight from Singapore where he was referred to Customs for a baggage search. He had previously travelled from New Zealand to the Philippines via Singapore on 1 June 2026.
An x-ray of his suitcase revealed the presence of a crystal-like substance scattered throughout. After examining the contents, officers located 18 packages disguised as green tea, which testing confirmed to be methamphetamine.
Customs Auckland Airport Manager Paul Williams says the recruitment of people to courier drugs across our border at the promise of fast money is a dangerous tactic used by criminal groups, with consequences extending far beyond the individual.
“It is not worth the lifelong consequences on yourself or the impact it will have on your family. You will be caught.”
“Every interception like this represents significant community harm prevented, in this case over NZ$20.5 million. But behind every arrest is a family dealing with the fallout, which can be difficult to undo.”
Everyone has a role to play in protecting New Zealand’s border and communities from illicit drugs. Suspicions about drug smuggling can be reported by calling 0800 WE PROTECT (0800 937 768) in confidence, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
