The man arrived at Auckland International Airport on a flight from China on 27 September last year, and was referred to Customs officers for further questioning.
A suitcase search revealed food and personal effects as well as cooking utensils, including a stock pot that seemed heavier than usual. There was also evidence of tampering with glue around the top.
An x-ray of the pot showed inconsistencies, leading Customs officers to drill into the bottom where they uncovered a white crystal substance that tested positive for methamphetamine.
The total amount found was equivalent to an estimated 179,000 doses, worth approximately NZ$1,074,000.
Chief Customs Officer Compliance and Enforcement, Ben Wells, says anyone attempting to bring illicit drugs through the border is taking a big risk - with significant consequences if they are caught.
