Customs arrested three passengers last weekend for attempting to smuggle nearly 30 kilograms of methamphetamine through Auckland International Airport.
The US nationals arrived on 2 November 2025 on a flight from Los Angeles, United States, and were referred for a baggage search.
Inside two suitcases belonging to one of the passengers, Customs officers found a total of 11 individual vacuum-sealed packages containing methamphetamine.
The quantity of drugs seized would have had a street value of approximately NZ$8.9 million and caused up to NZ$31.1 million in social harm.
Three individuals appeared in court this week charged with the importation of a class A controlled drug, with one also charged with Possession for Supply of a class A controlled drug.
Customs Auckland Airport Manager, Paul Williams, says his border officers have seized a record volume of methamphetamine this year.
“We are seeing more large-scale smuggling attempts than ever before, due to transnational organised crime groups targeting New Zealand for the profits to be made here.”
Everyone has a role to play in protecting New Zealand’s border and communities from illicit drugs.
