National Dog Championships 2022

It was nice to catch up with our detector dogs in Wellington as they competed in the National Police Dog Championships, which took place at the New Zealand Police Dog Training Centre in Trentham.

This is an annual competition hosted by the Police, with competitors from Police, Customs, Corrections and Aviation Security. The competition has two categories for narcotic detector dog teams and explosive detector dog teams and each of the teams undertake a range of scenarios deploying their dogs over three days.

After not being able to hold the competition for two years, it was great to see all of the training and hard work be acknowledged.

This year, we had teams Customs Officer Jodie and Anika, along with Senior Customs Officer Paul and Walt competing.

Congratulations to both teams! It was terrific to see Customs handlers competing at such a high standard and the strong bond between the handlers and their dogs was wonderful to see as well.
