Variation to the Automated Electronic System finalised: Integrating eGates with the NZTD system

11.59pm 30 June 2022

Under section 297 of the Customs and Excise Act 2018, Customs has made variations to the details of the automated electronic system known as eGate following a recent decision to integrate eGate with the New Zealand Traveller Declaration System (the NZTD system).

The NZTD system was established under clause 60 of the COVID-19 Public Health Response (Air Border) Order 2021 (the ABO) and enables the issue of NZTD traveller passes under the ABO. Customs officers have the power to direct travellers to produce these passes as evidence of their compliance with the measures that apply to them under the ABO.

Integration of the two systems will enable NZTD traveller passes to be processed electronically in the existing eGate system, as an alternative to processing by Customs officers.
